What would I be if not for grace, My sins to bare them in my place? /: I’d be a clump of frozen stone, A lifeless form of dust alone, A mountain veiled in mist and night, A dawn-less dark, without a light. :/ [V2] I’d be a lighthouse dimmed and broken, With empty sands and winds unspoken, With poison serpents creeping wide, No peace, no shelter left inside. /: I’d be a riverbed run dry, Where once a stream flowed rushing by A leaf torn off, without a way, Blown through the world in vain each day. :/ [V3] So I would be, but praise to You! Jesus my treasure, pure and true. A stream of grace that flows so wide, And fill’s my soul with joy inside. /: I’d never know life’s shining face, Its countless joy or tender grace. Nor would I feel love’s holy flame, With beauty trembling at its name. :/ [V4] Had You not been Goodness divine, The Source of all, forever mine, With mysteries deep and wonders grand, Who speaks and all obeys His hand, /: You lifted me from shadow’s gloom To realms of glory yet to bloom.
